I have already shown you the basics of windows 8 in my getting started with windows 8 post. Now in this post I am going to show you how to edit or customize windows 8 start screen.

Changing the background and color:

Open settings from charm bar (Windows+C) and click on change PC settings at the right hand side bottom. Now click on the start screen tab under the personalize option. You will be presented with several backgrounds and colors for the start screen. Select the one which you like then close PC settings by pressing Alt-F4 or by dragging the app from top to bottom.

Arranging tiles and grouping:

Arranging tiles in windows 8 start screen is very simple. Just drag a tile and place it wherever you want. If you want to place a tile in an entirely new group just drag the tile off the group and you will see a small light color box appear in background. Just drop the tile over there and it will be placed in a new group.

To change the size of the tile right click on the tile and  you will see an app bar at the bottom of the screen. Select smaller from that app bar and your tile will now become smaller in size.

You can also give name to the group of tiles. To do so drag your mouse pointer to the bottom right hand side corner of the screen and click. You will see a zoom out version of your start screen. Now right click on any group and select name group. You can give names like Games to group of games, Social to group of social apps, Media library to group of photos, videos and musics, OR any other custom   name you want to give.

Pin and Unpin apps from start screen:

By default not all the apps are present at the start screen. So what if you want a particular app right at the start of start screen. Well, in that case you first need to pin your app to start screen. To so first search for the app by directly typing at the start screen. Then right click on that app and select pin to start.

Now you will have your app on start screen. You can adjust the position of the app by dragging it to the desired position.

Similarly, you can unpin apps from the start screen by right clicking on them and selecting unpin from start.

Renaming the tile:

You can rename the tile of installed apps by right clicking on them and then selecting open file location. Change the name of the file over there, the name of the tile will be automatically changed.

P.S. : You cannot change the name of all the tiles by this method. Only the names of installed softwares can be changed.

In these ways you can customize your start screen to suit your personal needs and preferences.
